Camping Combinations
Lesson #11022
Concept:
This project introduces pupils to the notation of investigating and enables them to discuss mathematical problems. The story is set – nine teddies have gone camping to the woods. When they get to the woods, there are three tents. They have to discuss and arrange the teddies on the tents in as many different ways as possible i.e. 3 + 3 + 3, 4 + 3 + 1. This activity is great for promoting mathematical discussion and team problem-solving while at the same time encouraging the pupils to find all the possible ways of making 9.
Objective:
Curriculum: Foundation Stage/Key Stage 1
Foundation Stage/Key Stage 1 – Mathematical Development – Develop a variety of mathematical approaches and strategies
Foundation Stage/Key Stage 1
Age 5-7
Years 1-2
Dies used: A10824, A10833 and A10188
- Use an A1 piece of mount board as the base for this project.
- Die-cut three tents from orange card and three tents from green card. Trim the front triangle from the orange tents and glue onto the green tents to add depth and colour.
- Attach the three finished tents to the centre of the board using adhesive foam pads. Create a camp fire in the centre of the tents by cutting pieces from orange and brown card.
- Die-cut strips of grass to cover the bottom length of your board and attach using PVA glue.
- Die-cut nine Teddies from two different shades of brown card. Cut the round tummy parts from one set of teddies and glue onto the other set of bears. Add a piece of Velcro to the back of each bear and corresponding Velcro pieces onto the board so that pupils can attach the bears.
- Die-cut the title and the maths symbols using the Sassoon alphabet dies.
- The pupils can then arrange the teddies around the three tents in order to try different ways of making 9.
